WinPhone-Pocket v.3.1
Posted Wednesday, September 12, 2001 by PDA Center

If you need to send a fax, don’t look around, just look to your Pocket PC.

Basically, all you need to be able to make use of WinPhone-Pocket is a Pocket PC (or a Windows CE enabled device) and a modem (wireless or with a wire). Once you have these two essentials, you can use WinPhone. This software will replace your fax machine. It has the full functionality of a fax, only without the size or, unfortunately, the phone.

With WinPhone, you don’t have to send only your fax message. You can customize it completely. You can choose between three different cover pages, or none at all. You can type your message in, and/or attach a file. You can also choose between two resolutions: high resolution (Fine Mode) and standard resolution. Then, when you think it’s all ready, you can preview your fax. Once in preview mode, you can write on the fax itself using your stylus. You can also zoom in and out.

Another useful feature of WinPhone is that it allows you to receive a fax as well as send one.

Well, that’s about it in terms of features, so here’s how to use it.

After you’ve turned on your PDA and opened WinPhone, then it’s time to customize it for you. Tap Tools, and then Settings. On the first page, you set up the program, so that it knows what to use. You select which comm. port to use for your modem. Then, you select who manufactured your PDA (Compaq, HP, etc.), and then which model (for example, if you selected Compaq, then your only choice would be Aero 8000 Built-In Modem. After that, you choose your maximum fax speed. This is the speed with which WinPhone communicates with your modem to send and receive faxes. Please keep in mind that the speed you select is usually a little faster than the speed that it actually uses. Lastly, you can choose whether to keep a communication events log.

The next thing to set up will be the information about you. Tap on the Sender tab on the bottom. Here you enter information about yourself, including your name, address, company, fax number, and telephone number.

Next you will choose the default fax setup. Tap the Transmission tab on the bottom. First you will select your default cover page. By default it is set to None. Then, you can choose the logo on the cover page. If you have your own logo, or you use your company’s logo, browse to find the location of that image on your PDA, and then select it. If you don’t have your own logo, or have no idea what the heck a logo is, leave it the way it was originally with the BVRP Software logo. There are two checkboxes underneath the logo box; Auto size and Center. If you want your logo to be centered, tap the Center checkbox. If you would prefer it sized automatically, tap Auto size. If you don’t have a logo, leave it the way it came. Then, you can select the resolution. If you would like all of your faxes by default sent in high resolution, tap the Send in Fine Mode checkbox, otherwise leave it blank. The next checkbox allows you to choose whether or not to receive your faxes in high resolution or standard resolution modes. The last checkbox, Use Dialing Properties, allows you to specify your dialing information, for example tone or pulse dialing, what your area code is, and from where you are dialing.

Next, tap the right arrow to scroll the tabs at the bottom over, and then tap Layout. You may choose what font to use on your faxes and what size to make it. You can also specify what margins to use for the fax (how much space to leave at the different sides).

The last tab on the bottom is Service Center. Here you can choose a Service Center for SMS messages (short messaging service). The list has numbers worldwide in what seems to be no order.

After setting it up, you’re ready to send and receive faxes. To send a fax, tap New > Fax. Then you can create your fax by choosing whom to send it to (multiple recipients are possible). To send it to someone who you have already specified a fax number for in your Contacts, tap Select from Contacts. Otherwise, add a new person. Then tap OK in the top right hand corner. Here you choose your cover page, your message, any attachments, the resolution, and then preview it.

To receive a fax, tap Tools > Receive Fax.

That’s about it for this review. To find out more information or to order it, check out their Web site at http://www.bvrp.com .
